October 2021 | Department for Communities’ consultation on proposed amendments to the Local Government Pension Scheme (NI) The Department for Communities is consulting on proposals to bring in amendments to the Local Government Pension Scheme in Northern Ireland. These proposed amendments introduce changes required by an Employment Tribunal ruling on survivor benefits and a number of technical amendments and minor policy updates. This consultation is open from 8 October 2021 and closes on 10 December 2021. The consultation document is available on the Department for Communities website. July 2021 | HM Treasury consultation on proposals to reform the cost control mechanisms in public service pensions HM Treasury launched its consultation on 24 June 2021 and it welcomes input from stakeholders in Northern Ireland public service pension schemes. Details of how to respond to the cost control consultation are on page 5 (2.12 to 2.14) of the document below. July 2021 | On 20 July 2021, HMT published its response to the consultation on increasing the normal minimum pension age (NMPA). The draft legislation proposes increasing the NMPA from age 55 to 57 on 6 April 2028 and provides for some protected pension ages. The Department for Communities will need to decide whether the LGPS (NI) rules should be amended to allow LGPS (NI) members to receive payment of benefits between ages 55 and 57.
